How We See Your Business
Five questions that reveal why a business feels unhealthy.
"Something feels off" isn't specific enough to fix. These five lenses are a starting point for figuring out where to actually look.
What do we mean by "health"?
Business health isn't a department, and it isn't a score you get once and move on from. It's a question you ask about something else - a system, capability, or workflow - to see how well it's actually performing.
What you usually notice first is a symptom: leads going quiet, staff asking what happens next, a customer you never hear from again. Symptoms are real evidence - they're just not the same thing as the cause. The same symptom can come from unclear ownership, a missing handoff, or a dozen other things. That's what these five lenses are for: narrowing down where to actually look before you fix anything.
The five lenses
Demand
Are we creating enough interest and opportunity?
If nobody's reaching out, nothing downstream matters yet.
Conversion
Are things actually moving from interested to committed?
A lead going cold, a proposal nobody follows up on - these are conversion problems, not just "sales."
Fulfillment
Are we reliably delivering what we promised?
Onboarding, scheduling, doing the work, closing it out cleanly.
Retention
Are valuable relationships continuing and growing?
Or does everyone quietly disappear once the invoice is paid?
Are we actually steering the business, or just reacting to it?
Whether anyone owns decisions, whether problems get noticed before they're a crisis, whether things improve on purpose instead of by accident - rather than relying on memory or heroics.
We call this Governance internally
Seeing it in action
Take the Completed Work → Invoice workflow from the Systems & Workflows page. The Fulfillment lens asks: does a finished job actually turn into a bill quickly and reliably, or does it stall? If work sits for days before anyone invoices it, that's a Fulfillment-health problem showing up in that specific workflow - not a character flaw in whoever's supposed to send it.
Why four of these share a name with a business system
If you've read the Systems & Workflows page, you'll notice Demand, Conversion, Fulfillment, and Retention show up twice - once as a business system, once as a health lens. That's on purpose, not a mix-up: the system is the thing that exists (the actual machinery), and the lens is the question you ask about it ("how well is this working?"). Governance doesn't have a matching system - it cuts across all the others instead of being one of them.
We're treating this pairing as our current best answer, not a finished, locked theory - still working out the exact relationship between the two.
A lens narrows the search. It isn't a diagnosis by itself.
Reading this page can help you recognize which lens your problem probably sits under. It can't tell you the actual root cause in your business - that takes looking at what you're actually doing, not just naming the category. And these five lenses are separate from your departments (Sales, Ops, Finance), your capabilities (what your team can do), and your workflows (how work actually moves) - health is a lens over those, not another name for them.
Not sure which lens actually fits what you're seeing? The Workflow Finder asks a few quick questions and points you toward a likely starting point - no email required.
